Friday before Palm Sunday

On a blog link - or maybe it was on the actual blog - today I discovered that Palmolive dish soap, etc., is environmentally friendly because it is made from natural ingredients, like palms and olives! Amazing!

O Day Full of Grace

We were going to sing the first four stanzas of this mainly Pentecost hymn last night, but the HS caught us up in a spontaneous healing time instead. One of my faves!

O Day Full of Grace

O day full of grace that now we see
appearing on earth’s horizon,
bring light from our god that we may be
replete in his joy this season.
God, shine for us now in this dark place;
your name on our hearts emblazon.

O day full of grace, O blessed time,
our Lord on the earth arriving;
then came to the world that light sublime,
great joy for us all retrieving;
for Jesus all mortals did embrace,
all darkness and shame removing.

For Christ bore our sins, and not his own,
when he on the cross was hanging;
and then he arose and moved the stone,
that we, unto him belonging,
might join with angelic hosts to raise
our voices in endless singing.

God came to us then at Pentecost,
his Spirit new life revealing,
that we might no more from him be lost,
all darkness for us dispelling.
this flame will the mark of sin efface
and bring to us all his healing.

When we on that final journey go
that Christ is for us preparing,
we’ll gather in song, our hearts aglow,
all joy of the heavens sharing,
and there we will join God’s endless praise,
with angels and saints adoring.

Word of God, Speak!

Word of God, Speak!

I'm finding myself at a loss for words
And the funny thing is it's OK
The last thing I need is to be heard
But to hear what you would say

Word of God, Speak
Would You pour down like rain
Washing my eyes to see
Your Majesty
To be still and know
That Your in this place
Please let me stay and rest
In Your Holiness
Word of God, Speak

I'm finding myself in the midst of You
Beyond the music, beyond the noise
All that I need is to be with You
And in the quiet, hear Your voice

Word of God, Speak
Would You pour down like rain
Washing my eyes to see
Your Majesty
To be still and know
That Your in this place
Please let me stay and rest
In Your Holiness
Word of God, Speak

I'm finding myself, at a loss for words
And the funny thing is it's OK

For a while I've been photoshopping this great pic; I'm not yet satisfied with the results, but color balance, etc. is better now, and I also like the crosshatch filter on the couch.

Ice Cream Blog

First Ice Cream of Spring 2007:

this afternoon Judy, her daughter Dana and I went to RiteAid; since they sell the California State Fair award-winning Thrifty Ice Cream, I got two scoops of Pecan Praline, my favorite. Between Dana and Judy, though, it came down to a "don't tell Jamie we got Butter Pecan."

Wondrous Cross

We sang this amazing hymn last night--reputedly and reportedly, John Wesley said he'd give up all his other 2349283974 hymns to have written this one!

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Neopets: Tuskaninny

Not sure if this is exactly accurate (planning to retake the quiz), but the Neopet creature is very cute and I needed a blog for today, so here it is:

If I were a Neopet... I'd be a Tuskaninny!

Tuskaninny are fun loving creatures who love swimming and basking in the sun.
With the right training they can become quite fearsome fighters.

Green Day: Chelsea Morning

Green Day Today, All Day Long; this song has been going through my head for the past few days:

Chelsea Morning

Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning, and the first thing that I heard
Was a song outside my window, and the traffic wrote the words
It came a-reeling up like Christmas bells, and rapping up like pipes and drums

Oh, won't you stay
We'll put on the day
And we'll wear it 'till the night comes

Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning, and the first thing that I saw
Was the sun through yellow curtains, and a rainbow on the wall
Blue, red, green and gold to welcome you, crimson crystal beads to beckon

Oh, won't you stay
We'll put on the day
There's a sun show every second

Now the curtain opens on a portrait of today
And the streets are paved with passersby
And pigeons fly
And papers lie
Waiting to blow away

Woke up, it was a Chelsea morning, and the first thing that I knew
There was milk and toast and honey and a bowl of oranges, too
And the sun poured in like butterscotch and stuck to all my senses
Oh, won't you stay
We'll put on the day
And we'll talk in present tenses

When the curtain closes and the rainbow runs away
I will bring you incense owls by night
By candlelight
By jewel-light
If only you will stay
Pretty baby, won't you
Wake up, it's a Chelsea morning

Maundy Thursday 2007

Here's the first serious draft of the Great Thanksgiving I'm writing for this year's Maundy Thursday Eucharist:

MAUNDY THURSDAY 2007 | GREAT THANKSGIVING

• The Lord be with you.
• And also with you.
• Lift up your hearts.
• We lift them to the Lord.
• Let us give thanks to God.
• It is right to give both thanks and praise!

Holy God, Mighty Lord, Renewer of Creation and Bringer of Joy,
endless are your mercies and unending your grace!
Maker of stars and Giver of dreams,
it is privilege indeed to acclaim and adore you!

At the dawn of time your Word spoke order out of chaos and disorder, bringing beauty into your light;

Forming humanity in your image and drawing us into covenant with you, you called us to be your reconciling Presence in the world!

When we strayed from your path and fled from your presence, choosing idols and intellect rather than Spirit and Freedom, you led us through the wilderness into a country flowing with your extravagant supply.

When rebellion against your righteous law broke us once again, you would not let this world remain shattered, and in Jesus, man of Nazareth, born of Mary, born under the law, you lived among us, and in Jesus we met you face to face.

You baptized us with water, with fire and with your Spirit,
and sent Bread from Heaven to keep us wholly alive.

Therefore, in celebration with the people of God in all the ages, with all creation and with the angelic hosts of heaven, we sing:

Holy are you, God of Majesty and Awe,
and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son, our Redeemer and Lord.

Leaving the boundlessness of heaven,
he comes to earth, experiencing doubt, betrayal and abandonment
yet bearing the weight of sin and separation,
he carries us into the liberty of your grace.

Bound to the tree of shame on Calvary’s Hill,
shedding his innocent blood, he seals the covenant between heaven and earth.

Broken and dying for all creation’s sake
in judgment and in hope
he delivers us from sin and death,
creating in our inmost hearts the new creation promised by your prophets.

As we remember Jesus Christ’s birth, life, death and resurrection,
with the Church in every place and every time, we proclaim the mystery of faith:
• Christ has died;
• Christ is risen;
• Christ will come again!
In the night of betrayal and desertion, our Lord Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me."

In the same way after supper, he also took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."

For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes again in glory.
Giver of the journey and Bestower of the gifts,

Send down your Spirit of holiness and transformation,
and sanctify these gifts of bread and cup uniting us to all creation in every place and in every time.

Send down upon this assembly of your creation and redemption - and upon the world - your Spirit of life and renewal;

Calm our anxieties and quiet our fears;

Make us bearers of your grace
that we may be your reconciling embrace for the world, reclaiming, restoring and transforming all creation into the reign of heaven on earth.

Then, at last, when endless morning comes,
when all brokenness is whole and holy,
when all creation once again redeemed,
with all the saints of every time and place
as the family of God in Jesus Christ we will gather around heaven’s Welcome Table,

we will sing alleluias to you,
through Jesus Christ, crucified and risen
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
endlessly into eternity, amen!
forever and ever,
Amen!

Fish in the Sea

Fish in the Sea

I Stand in Awe

This evening's prelude:

I Stand In Awe Of You

You are beautiful beyond description
Too marvelous for words
Too wonderful for comprehension
Like nothing ever seen or heard

Who can grasp Your infinite wisdom?
Who can fathom the depth of Your love?
You are beautiful beyond description
Majesty enthroned above

Chorus

And I stand, I stand in awe of You
I stand, I stand in awe of You
Holy God to whom all praise is due
I stand in awe of You

Come just as you are.
Hear the Spirit's call.
Come just as you are.

Come and live forever.

Lent 2

This morning I played a setting of this hymn for the postlude; the tune is "Holy Manna" from Southern Harmony.

awesomely evocative poetic twentieth-century hymnody:

God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens, by Catherine Cameron, 1967; © 1967 by Hope Publishing Company

1. God, who stretched the spangled heavens infinite in time and place,
Flung the suns in burning radiance through the silent fields of space;
We, thy children, in thy likeness, share inventive powers with thee;
Great Creator, still creating, teach us what we yet may be.

2. We have ventured worlds undreamed of since the childhood of our race;
Known the ecstasy of winging through untraveled realms of space;
Probed the secrets of the atom, yielding unimagined power,
Facing us with life's destruction or our most triumphant hour.

3. As thy far horizon beckons, Father, give us strength to be
Children of creative purpose, serving others, honoring thee,
Till our dreams are rich with meaning, each endeavor, thy design;
Great Creator, lead us onward till our work is one with thine.
